·         CIA World Factbook This is a great source for general information about countries of the world.  You’ll also find good maps that have been placed in the public domain (i.e., they are not copyright protected).

·         Country Reports This is a subscription web site, but basic country statistics are available free of charge.

·         Library of Congress Country Studies  This is one of the best sites on the web for general information about many countries of the world.

·         Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. Contains an almanac as well as country and state profiles.

 

Place Names on the Web

·         USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) You'll find place names, map coordinates, and maps showing the locations of even the most obscure places in the United States.

·         US Census Bureau US Gazetteer

·         NGA GEOnet Names Server (GNS) If you're looking for places outside of the United States, this is the most comprehensive digital gazetteer on the Internet.

·         U.S.G.S. The National Map Viewer Compile maps of the United States using a variety of different data layers.

·         City of Victoria's Interactive GIS Website.  This web viewer allows you to look at detailed street maps and aerial photos of the city of Victoria.
